The Winter Garden, The Rain Barrel and Disneyland Dirt

When I was in Bhutan last fall I noticed many of the buildings had really cool cup rain chains, some silver, some copper but my favorite one had a red patina over silver. I'm sorry I didn't bring some home along with the prayer flags that I still need to hang in the garden. But as I learned from the monks, I need to make sure I hang them on an auspicious day.

In the meantime, I found a great rain barrel and a cup rain chain that's almost as good as the ones in Bhutan. Now I just need to wait for the rain.

The best news I have is that my garden is finally thriving! I had so many battles last year--bad dirt, snails, slugs, squirrels, deer, rabbits, raccoons and crows. For those of you who have followed me for a while, I've battled to grow organic veggies for the last 7 seasons. I think I've finally found the solution!

Here it is--enclosed raised beds. Dennis Shafer built these beautiful, removable panels on the raised beds and Mike Ellena delivered Disneyland dirt! Yes, really, the same dirt they use at Disneyland.

I don't know who's happier--me or the veggies!

Look closely and you'll see the very beginnings of a cauliflower.

 Here are the Brussels sprouts.

 The broccoli is doing well.

 Cabbage.

This bed started from seeds--carrots, 3 varieties of onions and beets.

This was another bed of seeds--radish, parsnips, turnips, celery and leeks.

 Red cabbage and bok choy.

The bok choy is ready to pick. I need to find something fun to make with it.

Here you see my efficient drip irrigation.

I put some flowers in the top of the rain barrel. It's fun to have a little color in the yard.

The peas have gone wild! Really. They are about 5 feet tall and producing the sweetest peas I've ever had.

I hesitated writing this for fear of jinxing things, but I'll just enjoy the moment and wait for an auspicious day to hang my Bhutanese prayer flags.
